ARD Manguiat discussed the policies set by DOST-Science Education Institute on service obligation, request for clearances (temporary/final), and travel requirements. Scholar-graduates must work in a government agency, local company, or NGO for a period equivalent to the length of time they enjoyed the scholarship.

The participants were also able to learn other DOST-SEI scholarships including Accelerated Science and Technology Human Resource Development Program (ASTHRDP), Engineering Research for Development and Technology (ERDT), and Capacity Building Program in Science and Mathematics Education which are for MS and PhD S&T scholarships.

Ms. Susan Anne Quirante from the Office of the Undersecretary of Department of Education presented the Hiring Arrangement for DOST-SEI RA 10612 Scholar-Graduates where they will be exempted from the regular evaluation process of DepEd for teacher-applicants in SHS and will be endorsed by DOST-SEI.

Some of their incentives include a Special Science Teacher I position, priority job placement, one-time relocation allowance if not assigned in permanent residence, and teaching opportunity for those who have not acquired Licensure Examination for Teachers (LET) eligibility, provided that they will pass the LET exam within five years from date of hiring.

To inspire the participants, guest speakers who were DOST scholars graduate working in different sectors were invited to share their experiences as a DOST scholar.

Jerry Sanguilosa is a recipient of DOST scholarship for his undergraduate, master’s, and doctorate degree. Always joked by his friends that he must be a loyalty awardee for DOST scholarship, he proudly answered them with, “I’m qualified for the scholarship so why not?”

He recalled that a UPLB Pahinungod volunteer encouraged him to take the UP entrance exam and DOST scholarship exam. Despite passing the UPCAT, Jerry almost was not able to enter college due to financial problem. His worries faded when he was also qualified for DOST scholarship.

For him, being a DOST scholar means not just studying for himself but also for the country. It also means fulfilling his dreams but also fulfilling the dreams of his countrymen. “Poverty is not forever. Use your God-given talents and experiences to progress in life,” said Jerry as conclusion.

The next speaker is a DOST scholar graduate now working in a private institution. Engr. Mark Anthony Francia is a graduate of BS Electrical Engineering in UPLB. For him, DOST scholars are not just smart but also trained to be patient, resourceful, and thrifty.

He gave some tips and shared his personal experiences to the scholars who are about to enter the real world soon. They should be tough to face the challenges, responsible to the tasks assigned to them, be ready for changes, know when to question the authority, and be wise in looking for opportunities in career growth.

Ms. Lyn A. Fernandez is the head of SETUP unit in DOST-CALABARZON. She is a DOST scholar in her undergraduate and master’s degree in Batangas State University and Ateneo de Manila University.

She told the scholars how it felt good that your parents won’t have to worry about your tuition fee and allowance. Being a DOST scholar allowed Lyn to love her country more and wanted to give back to the government after graduating.

She encouraged them to work here in the country and don’t let foreign countries take advantage of the local talent and skills.

The DOST scholarship aims to stimulate the interest of the Filipino youths in the field of science and to encourage them to contribute in the national progress by working in the country.|#BALIKAS_News
